AWOLNATION: Sail Meaning
Song Released: 2011
Sail Lyrics
This is how i show my love
Made it in my mind because
Blame it on my ADD baby
This is how an angel dies
Blame it on my own sick pride
Blame it on my ADD baby
SAIL!
SAIL!
SAIL!
SAIL!
SAIL!
Maybe i should cry for help...
-
Its a feeling in life. Pain. Its so distracting so "sail" is like a mantra. Nothing to fear when you are just sailing along on a boat in the salty air, surrounded by clear blue sea. We all deal with it differently but basically it comes down to either A. "Crying for help" or telling someone your problems/fears or B. killing yourself. Maybe Im not listening to all the advice people want to give when you are in this state. Maybe Im a different breed because its so unheard of to want to die or at least to talk about it. I think blame it on my add is like a joke. We are so quick to diagnose someone and write them off rather than solving the real problem. This is how an angel cries and this is how I show my love is by writing a song about it. I made it in my mind because I blame it on my add. When you have add your mind wanders off and on to other things.
Thats how it sounds to me.
Then again it could all be literal. -
I think this song is how a Mentally ill mass murderer like Adam Lanza feels after the deed is done. That's all I could see in the song and the lyrics. The vdo starts after he has committed all the crimes (probably killed girlfriends he loved). It's the police that are searching for him. And he knows he's close to the end of his life( I.e being caught for is crimes)
-
to me in my opinion the song is talking about wanting freedom i have add and thats all i want from it...is freedom..
-
Have you ever asked is it wrong to wonder or ask questions. i personally think the song is about how he is on to the illuminati, aliens, area 51,etc and the goverment is trying to kill him thats what the lasers are for and as you probably saw him hide under the water as the laser went by im guessing that was a way not to be sensed. thats what i understand SO FAR.
-
He is a wierdo that likes running away from some aliens.

I believe that this guy is singing about depression and when he refers to his "a.d.d.", he is actually referring to depression; which is pretty taboo to talk about (I would know). Nobody wants to kill them self over a.d.d. And a depressed person always in the back of their subconscious or in real time is doing things that suggest they are crying for help. Sometimes they even ask out loud if their pride lets them. Just like most others have said; I believe that "sail" means to leave, run or get the hell out if the person, place or thing. And for how the angel dies, I could see depression even making an angel commit suicide, being as painful and terrorizing as it is.
-
In my opinion, the song is about someone who is craving freedom from depressrion. He contemplates suicide, and blames it on his ADD (alcohol and drug dependency, not the attention disorder) and the word "nlame" implies that that's not the real cause. Possibly Chronic Depression or a bad relationship (this is how and angel dies, and the angel was his love). Each time he yells "Sail" he's imagining a world where he can "sail to freedom" from his bad habits.

OK so first of all add is not the. Attention deficiet disorder it stands for alcohol &drug dependancy, this was confirmed by the artist ...I listened to the lyrics over and over before watching the video and my conclusion makes perfect sense now. So here it is. A person on drugs is isolated, lonely, sad, confused and most of all PARANOID. yes there are referances to the illuminatti in the video but its not meant to be taken literally. The first lyric is "this is how I show my love" which simply means this (songwriting) is his way of expression, its how he relates and releases all the confused thoughts in his mind. He goes on to express. Random statements of how the drug use has affected him, "being a different breed" thoughts of killing himself, " this is how an angel dies", the term SAIL is simply a way to change the subject. Remember being in school( for the older generation) and having to watch slides of things in history class or something and at the end of each topic the person running the projecter called out SLIDE! ...same instance here. Sail is his term for changing to the next random thought. All the thoughts he exemplifies are related to what a drug user feels and how close he has cone to death which ties in to the video if u just dont take it so literally. The reason he uses a tape recorder is because the song itself will live on forever as if it will be left for generations to come to learn from and interpret...not to warn of aliens LOL!

Ok. I see where people are making the alien connection (pictures on the wall, topsecret files, space suit,) but I don't think it really holds any bearing on the lyrics. I think it just made for a cool video. If you look carefully at the picture of the "alien" on the wall, it's nothing more than several images of a person made to look crazy, it's not ET. The other ones are pretty random: two wolves fighting, a military dude manning a big gun, a naked person on the ground pointing to a shoe, etc.
The pictures may be a reflection of his life, blurred images in his mind. His "ADD" makes his mind race through his thoughts making it difficult to communicate exactly what he's thinking/feeling. His girlfriend is obviously upset that he is not showing his love in a sufficient manner, but he feels she is just not seeing the big picture. He sees it clearly, but she's not getting it. His angel(his one) dies, because he's to stubborn/afraid to admit his true feelings or he's making her fall from her angelic status in his own mind. He wants her to just understand his ways and trust him as she sails into the dark/unknown.
I don't think suicide is a theme here, sounds purely sarcastic. When the green light is following him in the house, he seems to be hiding from it in the bathtub, not trying to kill himself. Those are just half hearted thoughts about ways he could've changed things; why things went wrong. The tape recorder is not recording at that point either and the song changes tone after he says it. -
in my opinion He was left by his girlfriend and his way to deal with it is to "sail" therefore to run away. thats just how he shows his love, he doesn't know a different way. he's not like other boys who cry or kill themselfs but he tries to outrunn the pain. and he doesn't know where this running away will lead to. maybe hes also doing drugs in order to escape because the dark is a unknown, maybe bad future he will have
-
He feels alienated (aliens=alienated) because he is "a different breed". If you have ADD, sometimes you do things that people don't understand, or that give offense without understanding. It can loose you lovers, or set you apart. You are in a lonely world your whole life, but you keep on doing things that make the situation worse because of how you are wired. So you also blame yourself for your alientation, but you can't help it.
It is so ironic and hurtful, the way that "angels cry..."
In the song, this is the way he has lost the person he loves. He pleads for understanding: "This is how I show my love." He wants to be accepted for who he is, but he doesn't want to loose her. Maybe he has done something clueless, and then because of his own "sick pride" could not admit her hurt. He is so desperate and trapped, he thinks of committing suicide; or "Maybe I should cry for help."
"Blame it on ADD" isn't a cop out: far from it. It is a plea to be seen. He is saying that he loves her, but that he is going to miss things and get things wrong sometimes. That he is a "different breed". He is striving to accept this about him himself, while dealing with his separateness and desperate loneliness. Can they just "sail"? -
I think this song gives us a deep look into the mind of somebody suffering from mk ultra mind control.. coming from someone who beleives and supports vigilantcitizen com, I think this song shows how mind control victims believe they are less then human and are doomed to be different because of genetics or some outside source (a.d.d).. its no secret that people in the music industry are manipulated by dark forces.. p.s. for anybody who believes they have a.d.d. or think their bi-polar or WHATEVER it could be because of vitamin defiancy. Research alex jones vitammin defiancy, you'll be shocked.. lol I'm done now

You know what? Here's my interpretation. Yes, it's associated with Illuminati, but as much as I don't really like to say "Oh they're coming for you blah blah blah". Here it is.
I think he's 'known' about the illuminati, and people think he's crazy. So he blames it on his ADD. People may think he's crazy but he knows the truth. And he says "they're coming for you, so 'sail' away, [with me into the dark]." is how I think it is at least...
And in the end they're taking him away, because you know about Tupac I'm sure. How an album was called 'killuminati', (right?) and he was 'killed?' I'm not sure about it myself but people say he was killed by illuminati because he publicized the threats.
I don't know. My interpretation in a nutshell I guess. -
I believe he is running away from someone or something (depicted in the video being the "illuminati") and he seems to be taking his last stand before the illuminati and perhaps trying to warn us. I'm not so sure if the illuminati are even a threat but maybe there is a deeper meaning that he himself is expressing and. maybe only he truly knows what's the story behind the lyrics. The basic story showed in the video is that he is running away from the illuminati because they found out he was doing research and studying them and found out too much. They chase him back to his house where he finds a briefcase with illuminati emblem on it and has a wall of his studies showing random pictures one including the all seeing eye. He finds a tape recorder and starts to sing the lyrics into it. Like I said maybe it was a warning but truly where he takes his final stand. He has nowhere left to go. To believe that ADD literally had anything to do with the video is outrageous. Its not about mental illness nor love either. Its deeper then what the lyrics read. This is just my opinion but I feel I'm pretty dead on.

Aaron tells us in an interview that it isn't what it means to him neccesarily that's important. it's the beauty of everyone being able to have their own unique interpretation. I believe that this in itself reflects on the song "sail"s interpretation allong side his admitting that ADD stands for "alcohol and drug dependency". Posibly it is his uniqueness paired with his vices that cause his thoughts of suicide and alienation.
