   I think this song is about how mark has to hear his mom get abused and beat by her boyfriend/new husband and he tries to help her get away but there's nowhere to go and she goes back to him and the cycle continues.

   I believe this song is about Marks' mom and stepdad and his stepdad is a raging alcoholic and always abuses Marks' mom according to the "heard the angry voice of the man inside and saw the look of fear in my mothers eyes" and he is trying to get his mother to escape from it but won't "mom get in the car and lets drive away she said I'm sorry mark but there's a way to stay keep it bottled up inside heal a broken heart and let the engine die"
