Mayday Parade: Ghosts Meaning
Ghosts Lyrics
I’ve asked him to leave, but he keeps stopping by
And just when I think I’m alone,
It shows up again with a friend this time
And now this is getting old, I don’t know what to...
-
I think that the ghost in the bedroom that haunts him at night is depression and depression's friend is anxiety, and that that is who he is talking to in the beginning. It's giving him advice to do things that see good but only end up hurting him. It keeps coming back just when he thinks that it's gone, and now it's starting to feel like it will be with him forever and that there is no escape. He wouldn't be surprised if he had more things mentally wrong with him because of the voices he hears and talks to. He can't tell if the voices are real or just a made up version of her again. I think the her he is talking about is an old lover who took her own life because of depression and he still can't get over the fact that she's gone so he makes her up in his head. Now at the part where it says "no I won't waste away my love onto something new" that he is now talking to his deceased lover because he says if the only way out is death then he would come back for her, but they don't belong back in misery on earth. Now at the point in the song when he says "if he stays, well that just means I've got numbered days till I go back to my little world where it's just me and my imaginary friends." I think he is now starting to talk to a new lover that he and revealing to her about his broken past. He wants her to move on to another person so she doesn't " get stuck on [her] way"and end up like him because "the other sides a scary place" and depression is at her front door waiting for her. Depression has heard about her because in the midst of his depression he is thinking about her and having to leave her. He doesn't want to leave her, he wants her to love him but he also doesn't want her to get hurt when he lets go. Depression is getting closer to her and is now waiting for her in her bed and he'll be there when her world is crashing down on her.
-
I thought that this song was about how he has to deal with his loss, and when he says the other sides a scary place he's talking about hell or in the middle of going. When he's talking about how the ghost is teaching him to fight that it was him fighting his thoughts. The girl is saying that she wants to stay with him but he wants her to pass over at the same time.He can't tell wether it's his mind or her again. He doesnt want to bring her down by forgeting her in the real world. He says that he wont let her down but he will.I feel like he's been talking to himself about her when he says god knows he's heard all about you.

Ghosts is much more than that.
If you're a true mayday fan you'd see where this song stands out from their usual "girl breaks my heart relationship songs". This whole album has a religious touch which alludes to thoughts about the band as a whole. Either getting in touch with their religious side or just adding that element to their sound.
Ghosts, for me, is not about a girl or a past relationship.
Mayday parade's music has always been me and my friends favorite band. In June, my friend decided to take his own life. In the past, he battled addiction issues, but he had just left rehab in March and was doing the best he had been in years. He was in college and after rehab he moved into a new house with "better" roommates so he wouldn't be around the drug influence.
And that's just what it was for him, a better atmosphere (so he thought)
He wasn't depressed or sad nor did he relapse.
Literally out of the blue he killed himself in that house. In his closet-Monsters in the closet.
Well it turns out that the house was previously owned by a family and they had a son the same age as my friend who killed himself the same way and in the same closet.
Like I said Mayday Parade songs have always mimiced our relationships. & now it just so happens that now my friend passes and their album is called Monsters In The Closet? And their very first song Ghosts gives me so many answers that could have never of made sense unless they were coming from my friend solely. Idk the meaning of this song but I know what it has done for me and that is that it has given me closure.
As cliché as it may be, I cannot thank the band for getting me through this time, because they have more than anyone will ever know. -
I really think this is the same topic as "Everything's an Illusion" from 2011's self titled album.

I have a feeling this song is about a ex girlfriend or good friend that died and yet he can't accept the fact she's gone. She visits him and talks to him which is really only all in his head. When he says "go on love, find a new direction" I think he's back in reality here and trying to forget about her and the pain that she now leads in his life since she's passed. When he says "let it go of all the little things you know I do" he's telling her that he know she knows everything he's done and hides away from the public but he's tell her to let it go and not let it worry her. When he says "slowly, slowly how can I calm down" I have a feeling he's telling her he'll never get over the pain of her death and that his life has shattered since he lossed her. In this song it's about losing reality and finding it again. It sounds crazy but it honestly isn't. This is just my take on ther song.

I thought Derek was talking about an ex that keeps visiting him when he thinks he's over her but when she comes, he falls in love with her??? Idk
-
It seems to about a girlfriend (maybe an ex)and the way he talks about her I think hes saying she is dead
"You're on my lifelong list of wishes, And I could bring you back, but we don't belong here now."
"So go on, love, find a new direction,
(hold my heart, keep it for protection).
And don't get stuck on your way.
The other side's a scary place.
(Do your best not to be afraid)"
I personally think its about a loss and how he got over it... feeling like he had no one but himself and the dark thoughts which create "The Ghost" -
I think that Derek is speaking of a mistake or regret that no matter what he does, it keeps coming back to haunt him everywhere he goes. At the end, his "ghost" (regret) teaches him to fight for what he has in the now and it teaches him to face his past fearlessly.
