Owl City: Alligator Sky Meaning
Song Released: 2011
Alligator Sky Lyrics
Where was I when the rockets came to life
And carried you away into the alligator sky?
Even though I'll never know what's up ahead
I'm never lettin' go, I'm never lettin' go
Shawn Chrystopher:
Uh uh, that's not a plane, that's...

To me, I think he's sad because a girl close to him passed away. "Where was I, when the rockets came to life, and carried you away, to the alligator sky" I think that states that the rocket took the girl into the alligator sky. I interpret the alligator sky as Heaven or a place hidden, because of facts about alligators (they hide under water). :P I hope this helps, and of course, I'm probably wrong. (:

I believe that the sky's, like anything worth going for could cost your all. In some cases it is scary, but with that fear, faith gives you freedom to find those dreams. So if you can find the nerve to hang on through failure, anything can be achieved.

the song is about the death of his girlfriend in high school and how he didnt get to be there during her last moment.the alligator sky is heaven and the rockets are angels.so basicly he is saying where was i when the angels came to take you to heaven.

alright this is what i get from the song in other words what i interpret. when he talks bout where was i when the rockets came to life.. i think he means he lost someone. and also if you hear shawn he talks a lot bout the sky is the limit etc. dream big imagine! and in the end of the video you see them both in the rocket to the alligator sky or heaven. and he says he doesnt know whats coming but hes not gonna let go. i think he lost someone and he loved em so much he dreams about goin up to see them one day :)
-
This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

This song is a conversation between Adam and Shwan.. Shawn has died and is in Heaven, Adam is still on Earth musing about Heaven.. it actually does make perfect sense.. only thing that confuses me is why he calls Heaven 'Alligator Sky'
-
Somehow its a bit lonely too. Most of his songs are that way. But this one seems to emphasize it a bit more. However i think this song is about moving on and the music video sorta shows it as that way, also i think it explains the difficulty of moving on ahead. Watch the music video (the ending especially). Anyway theres loads of ways to interpret songs by owl city, whats important is what you think ;)

well hes talking about a missed opportunity when he says where was I? when the rockets came to life so on. even though he doesnt know what is to come, hes not gonna waste his time with nonsense and he's going to hold on to what hes been missing in his life. a life and a world of your own. The sky represents unreachable levels. he explains how ecstasy has turned to cavalier. his physical needs for things have turned into a much more mental state of thinking and he feels as if this is his rescue.
-
i think he is talking about the people on earth has eather died or gone into extinction ..he wont let go of his dream to bring them back...find a way for the world to be lived on again. he wonders where he was when it happened..he dosent care what will happen .. hes gonna do whatever he can ... wow or mabey its kinda like Wall.E

"don't let the sky be the limit, when there are footsteps on the moon."
Whoever you are, you are AWESOME for this comment.
There are no limits at all in this universe other than those that we impose upon ourselves.
I'm going to the next Dimension.Hmm... I wonder where I was when that happened? I can't wait to find out.
Vanilla Twilight is coming.
Wanna go too? -
I think this song is trying to instill the mentality that our dreams can come true. He's letting us know not to limit ourselves by our shortcomings (Subliminally stated throughout the song). Each time I listen to it, I hear: Don't let the sky be the limit when there are footsteps on the moon.
-
Its simple! it's about losing someone you love! Every lyric represents this!
Alligator sky is heaven!
Think about it -
Maybe, if u look at the last minute of the video, he lost someone close to him. There is a cemetary, a bench swinging by it self, etc., then all that with snow. So maybe he is saying Where was i when God took you to the sky? Maybe...that's MY interpretation.
-
I think the song is about achieving your dreams and never giving up on them. "Alligator Sky" probably refers to the finish line of your dream when you have fulfilled it.
