Rammstein: Links 2 3 4 Meaning
Links 2 3 4 Lyrics
KÖNNEN HERZEN SPRECHEN
KANN MAN HERZEN QUÄLEN
KANN MAN HERZEN STEHLEN
SIE WOLLEN MEIN HERZ AM RECHTEN FLECK
DOCH SEH ICH DANN NACH UNTEN WEG
DA SCHLÄGT ES LINKS
KÖNNEN HERZEN SINGEN
KANN EIN HERZ...

#1 top rated interpretation:A lot of people who dont know much about Rammstein (or Germany) believe Rammstein are Nazi/fascists and this song is a response to that which mocks those who don't look deeper into the lyrics. Although maintaining the fascist facade with the marching chant of "links zwo drei vier" Til sings in the chorus what could be translated and summarised as "they want my heart to beat on the right (as in, right-wing/fascist), but it beats left (as in left-wing)"

striktly politikal meant, i presume
like often they adapt well known phrases.
all the things hearts could do are typical expresions known to everyone in germany.
and the chorus?
it revers to a klasikal german workers-marching-song (also sung by ton steine scherben):
"und weil der mensch ein mensch ist
drum hatt er stiefel im gesicht nicht gern
er will unter sich keine sclaven sehn
und über sich keinen herrn
drum links 2 3
drum links 2 3
wo dein platz genosse ist
reih dich ein in die arbeitereinheitsfront
weil du auch ein arbeiter bist" -
Besides the political interpretation, I think that they want to tell, that one's heart isn't a servant. People shouldn't mindlessly obey to orders like in army - 'kill the others' etc. I think it's a double meaning of 'They want my heart at RIGHT place, but it beats up there, on left". 'Right' can mean conservative, as well as 'on the place which we WANT it to be' like in army. Although soldiers should obey and dont discuss their views on some things, they are humans too, and have emotions as well.

The song is a political creed like the band members said.
„Wir marschieren, aber wir sind links, absolut klar bekennend links.“ - Flake
-> "We are marching, but we are leftists, totally avowing leftists." -
This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway
