Disturbed: The Infection Meaning
The Infection Lyrics
Barely even remember when..
There was nothing left to hide and..
She had found a way inside, then..
I was forced to walk alone..
Living in an empty home..
All I wanted was to hide and..
Try to numb the ache...

#1 top rated interpretation:I have been through exactly what this song is about. Being dumped by someone you trusted compleatly and trust me it does kill you. I am now a different person and it sucks. I am lucky though. The infection did die

#2 top rated interpretation:I believe this song is about someone being hurt by a girl and its like a sickness inside him. He feels like a fool for even having feelings for her and feels as though people are laughing at him. and he has to kill this sickness because its killing him inside.

#3 top rated interpretation:The Infection is about a relationship that falls apart and the sorrow it brings you. The "Infection" is actually the sorrow that you feel and how it eats you alive and, inorder to survive, you must kill the infection before it kills you.

When I hear this song it reminds me of something that happened to me. "She had found a way inside" means he didn't want to fall in love with her and if you look back earlier he said " I can Barely even remember when There was nothing left to hide" so I think this means he finally told her how he felt about her "then I was forced to walk alone" means she didn't feel the same way. "All I wanted was to hide and try to numb the ache inside" He's so embarrassed all he wants to do is be alone and "try to numb the ache inside" (alcohol, drugs and cutting are a few examples). "And a thousand voices share their laughter at my demise" he feels like he's just a joke and can't be taken seriously. "Now if I am to survive The infection must die Murder the beast that's been eating me alive The infection must die" He realizes he's just gotta forget he ever cared at all and move on. "Ready to allow the dark to Penetrate his broken heart" he's ready to replace the love he had felt with hatred and evil.
Maybe I'm completely wrong and just basing this to much off of personal experiences but that's what I get from the song. -
This song is about depression. Whom or whatever brought it upon him left it there to stay, it's about him trying his very best to kill the infection (Depression) before it eats him alive.
-
This song is about someone's girlfriend breaking up with him because she found out something she shouldn't have and she exiled him and turned all his friends against him. Now he doesn't even want to leave his house but the memories still won't leave. He feels lonely and lost.

The song "The Infection" is exactly what it means...try any infection actually. Darkness is an infection. In my opinion, the song can refer to something which keeps you from people or anything that is good, like family and I'll quote one of the anonymous when they say "try addiction and you get closer" because then the song goes on saying "this demon inside"
Let's look at the lyrics and examine...the infection!
In the back of my mind I can
Barely even remember when
There was nothing left to hide and
She had found her way inside then
I was forced to walk alone
Living in an empty home
All I wanted was to hide and
Try to numb the ache inside
(I say any addiction that numbs the pain like...drugs, beer, alcohol, any type of addiction)
And I’m still afraid of the lights
And a thousand voices share their
Laughter at my demise
(pride comes before the fall...laughter from the outside)
Now if I am to survive
The infection must die
Murder the beast
That’s been eating me alive
The infection must die
(battling the darkness from within one's self...have it be no more...you are free from the demon of shadows)
Nothing left but a broken man
Terrified of everything
Nothing left of his foolish pride, his
Fond memories slowly die, then
As he wakes again alone
Still a prisoner in his home
Ready to allow the dark to
Penetrate his broken heart
(can't take anymore, realizes he/she is still in that place...wants it be done, so surrender to your demon)
And he’s still afraid of the light
And a thousand voices share their
Laughter at his demise
(again...pride is foolish, the outside laughing)
Now if I am to survive
The infection must die
Murder the beast
That’s been eating me alive
The infection must die
Now if I am to survive
The infection must die
Murder the beast
That’s been eating me alive
The infection must die
This is where I draw the line
This infection must die
Give me release from this demon of mine
The infection must die
The infection must die
(the infection I think is just darkness inside someone's heart...take the game Kingdom Hearts for example, battle the shadow and that has taken hold of you and let it enter NO MORE...NO POWER.) -
Check Wikipedia, David Draiman said it is about a relationship. Yes, Disturbed released Inside the Fire in 2008, yes it is about a relationship. The Infection was released in 2010, so why can't it be about a relationship? And if you think about it, many Disturbed songs are about relationships: Stupify, Down with the Sickness, Stricken; they can all be interpreted as relationship songs. I like the cancer idea though, and the zombie one

its about his girlfriends suicide. she had found a way into his heart and then he was forced to walk alone. the infection is the growing pain and sorrow, hes trying to say that he must move on inorder to be happy again.
-
Serioulsy the dog thing is dumb, but yeah I think it's about drugs. David doesn't really write relationship songs. Except for "Inside the Fire" like someone else said.
-
I think it's about drugs, bcuz David used drugs after his girlfriend commited suicide . . . also, that theory about the dog seems a bit dumb (no offence), why write such a song about a dog?

Try addiction, and you'll get closer.
Something triggered the initial "numbing" of the pain inside (see: "Inside the Fire" for what did it), and the addition became the monster eating him alive; the infection is the addiction that set in after he tried to numb the pain of loss and grief.
If he's to survive, that infection (the addiction) must die. -
