Within Temptation: The Last Dance Meaning
The Last Dance Lyrics
yaha yaha yaha yaha yaha oh oh
yaha yaha yaha yaha yaha yahoh
yaha yaha yaha yaha yaha oh oh
she sent for you last night, she heard you were calling
yearning in tears a thousand times
her spirit was...
-
I believe it is about someone passing after a long time. Most likely an old husband.
"She sang for you last night, she heard you were calling,
Yearning in tears a thousand times."
A lot of people claim to have heard or felt their loved ones visit them after death. I have heard weird stories where people claims they have been called up by someone, who asks if their loved ones have died because they had this "bad feeling". This is however, not a forum to discussing life after death, so let's keep the discussion about the validity of the claim out of this discussion.
"Your spirit was floating, your spirit was searching
On a cloud of dreams."
He has not yet left the earth he is searching for something and he does not know what.
"A moon beam shines bright in the city of angels
Guiding the dreamers back to life,
And they'll do the same every tomorrow
Till the pain subsides."
This is a bit unclear to me. The first part is about there being a guiding light to heaven and the life is referred to the eternal life, rather then going back into his old body. However I am not sure about the pain part. It might just be fill out.
"Don't be scared now,
Close your eyes,
She holds guard tonight.
Go on forward,
No remorse,
Life will take its course."
This is an encouragement from third person to pass on, rather than to linger. In western countries there is something called wake, or gathering. These days this is usually held after the burial ceremony, but earlier (and still in some old celtic countries, like ireland) this ceremony was a vigil to "hold guard" over the body, until the burial.
"She danced with you last night so you will remember
All you have shared, the lifetime.
The angels were watching and death will be waiting
Until the time is right."
This indicates she had spent a long time together with the deceased, which means it is probably an old husbund or such.
"Hold on to memories,
See what lies ahead.
Life will go on and we are one
With every step you take."
It is unclear who says this, but it more or less means that while the body is in the ground, his memory will live on. -
I think it's about death: "Life will take its course.", "A moon beam shines bright in the city of angels/ Guiding the dreamers back to life," "All you have shared, a lifetime./The angels were watching and death will be waiting/ Until the time is right."
-
It's about someone who lost a loved one, and they really miss the person. Then they have a dream about the person, and they realize that the person isn't really gone. I know it sounds sort of cheesy, but I think that's what the song is about.

I think this is about a dream that someone had, of an angel that took care of them. Yeah, I know, bad interpretation, but it's all I've got.
