Within Temptation: Stairway to the Skies Meaning
Stairway to the Skies Lyrics
can't believe I'm still alive
And heaven was waiting for me
I thought this would be the end,
but I know you'll understand
All that is keeping me here
I dream of a stairway to the skies
my angel is coming down...

The album is a concept album with a couple of cinematic videos and a series of 6 comic books. Taking the whole into account I believe it is sung from the perspective of a female cop whose daughter was murdered by “the demon” in “Cruel Demon’s Fate”. The cop is killed but resurrected by the woman who does the Album’s intro so she can fight the evil that killed her daughter and others. As the last song on the album and the and of the story, the spirit of the cop’s daughter comes to guide her mother to heaven, but the cop can’t bring herself to go, driven by vengeance to keep fighting evil. To reassure her daughter and allow her to pass on to heaven, she tells her to go on without her but she’ll be “only one step behind”

I think this song is about losing your husband, wife or partner to an untimely death. The singer is left on Earth and filled with the longing to find a way to reach her angel in heaven. She dreams of being reunited with her lost love and holding him in her arms once more.

I think that, after a fight for being a good person,a religious, you realize that maybe is not enough to assure you a place in heaven and thinks for another way to reach to the heavens door,in the song that person is blinded by regrets and hopes for a new start in life.Who knows

i think this song is about a person, christian in faith, who dreams of a place in heaven but is hindered by there desire to do something against their faith, they feel the need to do this deed but still they cant risk losing a place in heaven
