Within Temptation: Our Solemn Hour Meaning
Our Solemn Hour Lyrics
Sanctus Espiritus! insanity is all around us
("I speak to you for the first time as Prime Minister in a solemn hour for the life of our country")
Sanctus Espiritus!
Sanctus Espiritus!
Sanctus...

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

I believe that this song is about war. By the way, Sharon has an amazing voice.Yes,this song does speak of war. And the "sanctus espiritus" part is Latin for "holy/sacred spirit".
-
I don't think, that this song is from the point of view of a single country. It think it is more than that.
In my opinion, this song is about the eager with whome so many march for glory und heroism into war. Not only in one country but in all of them.
They let their beasts out in an act of madness. I guess the part about what have we learned may be about WWI, where Europe (and America as well) was thirsty for blood.
We shouldn't see war as an honor, as a duty, or as an heroic act. War is simply madness, but we all tend to forget and then glorify our ancestors and our countries. But so often we don't see, that after all, we are brothers and sisters. So we all shall restrain the beast in our heart and give peace a chance. We would all be surprised. -
Churchill's “Be Ye Men of Valor" speech, the lyrics deal with mankind's fascination with war, propaganda and how we as people fail to learn from our mistakes and destruction. The chant of “Santos Espiritos” leads the song's chorus, meaning “A cry out to god,” as den Adel explained to us in a May 2007 Live-Metal.net interview.

(In my darkest hours I could not foresee That the tide could turn so fast to this degree) A person had a perfectly normal life that was ripped apart by war.
(Are they themselves to blame The misery, the pain? Didn't we let go? Allowed it,let it grow) They could have stopped this before it even started.
(Will we remember all of the suffering `Cause if we fail it will be in vain) People are dieing. We have to remember this in the future, because if we don't, we'll just repeat our mistakes. More people will die.
I love this song. I think it holds a great message, some of the songs that I write hold the same message. I wish people would listen to this message more often. -
It's kinda hard to figure out, but I think it's pretty much asking "What's the point in this war? What can we possibly gain from the fighting and bloodshed?" Since there's killing involved in wars, and it says "Sanctus Espiritus (Holy Spirit) redeem us from our solemn hour", it's kinda asking to be saved from the war.
-
It's about the Holocaust and the memories left behind and the agony of WW2 and the pain that spread over Europe. It's apology to G-d and to the people who begged for help over those years. The millions who died.
-
It's hard to tell exactly what She may be referring to, but seeing as Churchil says at the opening of the song "In solemn hour" this is obviously derived from this section.
Personally, I think the song is like the 'we are sorry' from the Germans for creating such havoc in Europe During WWII. The lyrics suggest it as she refers to "we" and "us" and with her lines saying "Sanctus Espiritus, is this what we deserve can we break free, from chains of never ending agony" This to me implies that the Germans or the Axis as a whole are wanting forgiveness and want to be free of their ancestors shame so to speak. It's a crude assumption but anything can work really -
I think it's about WW2 due to Churchill saying his speech in the backround. I also think hes singing from a Jew's Point of view. When she says " redeem us from our solemn hour.insanity is all around us" and " Is this what we deserve can we break free" I rly lik this song.
