Alkaline Trio: Cooking Wine Meaning
Cooking Wine Lyrics
-
It's about heroin , you cook heroin and you need it to be strong he has had a hard day he's drunk needs a hit to wind down
-
It´s quite clear that it´s about being drunk, but that would be like saying "We´ve had enough" is about dead people. True, yet not enough. what´s happening here is a very common couple situation, where, a guy, had a shitty day and as a girl, whenever your guy has a shitty day, you want him to talk about his feelings and cry on your shoulder. As a guy, you want to forget about it, drink it out, maybe sleep with your girl and forget that there is a problem around, so this guy is in no mood to come home to his girl to "talk about his feelings" or even worse, he´s had too much shit for a day to go home and suck it up more, so he has a few drinks, which he seems to do often, since that liver can´t seem to take it anymore, and he goes back home to his angry girl and in stead of saying "I had a shitty day" he says "sorry I´m late, you look awfully pretty" meaning "I had a shitty day, it´s not about you, you can´t fix it, I already drank it up, so, forget about it".
You don´t want to drag your problems home, you want to drink them up, then get home and pretend they don´t exist. -
The "It" in the song is his liver... The song goes: "Sorry I'm late, I was out spoiling my liver... And it isn't strong enough to burn away the cooking wine..."
-
This was actually suggested by a good friend of mine. The song seems so straight forward, I know. Drinking. But what about the line "Is it strong enough to burn away the cooking wine"? What does that mean- what is "it"? Cocaine seems a possible answer. It is commonly referred to as "heat" or "fire" and is used to feel more sober after drinking. So it makes sense that he would ask if the coke was strong enough to sober him up and keep him awake after a drinking binge. Basically, he comes home drunk off his ass and his girlfriends pissed, so he tries using coke to sober up for her and stay awake,
