Even though they’re in love, they can’t be together for whatever reason, likely because she’s leaving for another destination on a “red eye” flight. They have one last night together in central park, and she wishes that her lover hadn’t told her “i love you” because it would’ve been easier for her to cope emotionally, and move on when she leaves.

#2 top rated interpretation:I know it's not the actual meaning, but what I love about her songs is that it can be interpreted many ways. She has said it is about someone dying, but personally, the song to me is a song that reflects my current situation. A girl is currently in a relationship with one guy and has another guy best friend. "It's not true, tell me I've been lied to" is when the best friend admits to the girl that he has feelings for her. "What the hell did I do, never been the type to let someone see right through" being best friends they tend to open up a lot to each other. Then the chorus describes the moment when the best friend says "I love you", maybe it was a slip up or a joke, that probably shouldn't have been said due to the situation. "Up all night", they've been talking all night. "I didn't mean to make you cry" is the girl feeling guilty that he feels so upset because he didn't find the courage to ask her out in time. - so this is what happened to me and every lyric in the song just relates to it so well that I thought I'd share my other interpretation, even if it isn't the real meaning.

It makes me think of a guy I met when I was working abroad at this annual event. He was from there and I’m from Holland and we became good friends. After the show we didn’t see eachother for a year.
One year later we saw eachother again. We once again had an amazing time and he told me he had recently moved in with his girlfriend.
...but at the end of the week, when we went out for a swim in the sea he dropped the bomb: he had deep feelings for me. I didn’t know what to say (man I had a huge crush on him but didn’t want to ruin his relationship). We both knew we had to forget about it.
It was the night before I’d head back home, I couldn’t sleep all night and cried during the entire flight.
We didn’t speak for ages. But eventually he broke up with her and we decided to give it a try.
I’d fly over and we’d have the most amazing times. But one night when I was lying in his arms in his aunt’s garden we both told each other it was not gonna work. The long distance was killing us and we were so sad everytime we were apart.
I still regret not showing how much I actually loved him. I still do after 1,5 years but I guess some beautiful things are just not meant to last forever.
As Billie said as well: all we have is this exact moment, and in an hour it will be gone. So ALWAYS enjoy it while it lasts.

The lyrics just make me think of my own mistakes
I was living my life peacefully, so my neighbour who I didn't like for his quiet and selfish attitude, started becoming too close to me, followed me everywhere, literally does everything for me. He wants to say something but he hangs up. Everything he does just had one meaning `` he was inlove with me but couldn't say it''.. I tried my best to avoid having feelings for him because I still believed he had those bad character. But I did, Today its a different turn around. I just can't explain, he just changed back to how I knew him to be.. I became the one who looks obsessed about someone... He's just too greedy, selfish and lacks ability to plan his future... But I love him, I said it but he pretended like he didn't hear a thing.... I don't know people, it's complicated -
I feel like this song is one of the coolest, most raw and lifelike Billie Eilish songs I’ve ever listened to. I feel like this song is about a girl who’s best friend tells her he loves her accidentally and she doesn’t want to say it back because she’s super scared she’s going to ruin the relationship if it doesn’t work out. Super relatable for me at least...

i think she wrote the song to her late friend x. and when she says another red eye, it means that her ocean eyes are red, from crying and rubbing them so much. when she says tell me I've been lied to, I think she means that she doesn't want to believe that he died. when she says I've never been the type to let someone see right through, I think she means that he could "read" her so easily, and that they just had a chemistry where it was like they could see through each other, or that they could see past the lies.

Billie was great friends with X, and so she made a song about how much she loves him. I think so because in the beginning it sounds very much like ALONE part 3 by X.

This song is about X. He was a friend of Billie. His music saved her and inspired her. He was really kind to her. His life itself really effected Billie, and when he died she was crushed. X was there for Billie when she was at a low point writing her album. In the line, “the smile that you gave me even when you felt like dying,” references the night when he texted her saying he was there for her even when he was going through his own sadness.

This song should be interpreted by the singer. Regarding the person who is saying that it reflects their current situation. If you are the guy best friend you should have made the move when she didn't have a bf. She already has a bf, accept it and move on.
That's why it is not right to have a best friend who is not the same gender like you. I think your best friend is confused, she talks all the time and all day with you. She should have respect to her bf. Does her bf know she is up all night with you? That is why it's impossible to have a truly real best friend with the opposite gender because time spent with them will only destroy a serious relationship that they already have. It is very rare to have a real pure platonic male female friendship.
If you only see her as a friend, you should know your limitations. If you have feelings for her, remove it, respect her relationship with her bf.
If you are destroying their relationship then you don't respect her, her bf, and you don't respect yourself.

I’m pretty sure it’s about a complicated relationship where the guy keeps on saying “I love you” to her but his actions speak otherwise. Billie truly loves him and doesn’t want to be in love with him because of what he does. So long story short it’s about a toxic relationship.

I think it is about x dying that’s what I have been told by a boy at my school and ever since he has said that it’s coming together price by price because in the song it says ‘...tell me I’ve been lied too’ and maybe she is thinking tell me I’ve been lied to about his death. So that’s my interpretation about the song

I love you is about someone in a relationship telling their significant other that they love them, and the other feeling scared about her feelings towards him. She loves as well but can't muster up the courage to tell them because she prefers to keep her emotions concealed. That's what I think the song is about.
