This interpretation is very long so if you don't want to read the whole thing the song basicly means that she had a friend when she was younger that moved on to bigger and better things while she was stuck in her home town. She still misses her friend and is always ready if she/he decides to come home.

Here are some of the lyrics that prove varies points. It shows that she was friends with this person by "I used to know you when you were young you were in all my dreams, we sat togther in period 1, Friday's at eight 15.

It shows that she/he became famous by "Now I see your face in the strangest places, movies and magizines, and I saw you taliking to Christopher Watkins, on my TV screen."

The song shows that Katy is always ready for her friend to come back home by "I will wait for you, as long as I need to, and if you ever get back to Hackensack, I'll be here for you."

It then explains how Katy's career did not work and she is working a hard job. It says "I used to work at the record store, now I work for my dad, scrapping the paint off of hard wood floors, the hours are pretty bad"

Through the song she expresses how she is down on herself. She knows that her friend is lucky but wants him/her back. I think she thinks that she was a failure. " Some times I wonder where you are your probably in L.A., that seems to be where everybody else ends up these days.

It then continues with the chorus about how she will always wait for her friend.
