'97 Lyrics

Alkaline Trio
'97

I've got it now, a thorn in my side the size of a Cadillac.
Drive it through, cause backin' up now would be next to impossible.
I had it all.
When I was with you I forgot about everything.
Eighteen months, eighteen...

Skiba uses love as a metaphor for going into rehab over a drug. The break up an emotions that you go through a break up really are the same as from recovering pot, and that's where he got the idea.

This is one of the most clever bits of writing in Skiba's catalog... Double meaning implying a lost love, but the lost love is pot.

Play the song for a friend who has never heard it and ask what they think it's about. 100% of the time they'll say it's about a girl.

This song is about when Matt was arrested and put on probation for 18 months (hence the line "18 months is like fucking eternity") and was not able to smoke pot anymore ("when I was with you I forgot about everything" and "you'll be there, to dry my eyes")
